PURPOSE: A negative active material for a rechargeable lithium battery is provided to suppress volume change in charging/discharging by forming an organic crosslinking layer on the surface of an active material and to improve the lifetime property of the rechargeable lithium battery. CONSTITUTION: A negative active material for a rechargeable lithium battery comprises an active material and an organic crosslinking layer which is formed on the surface of the active material and has nano-size pores. The organic crosslinking layer comprises a polymer formed through the crosslinking between polymers represented by chemical formula 1.
