PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester fiber suitable for rubber reinforcing uses such as a tire cord, belt uses, spring uses, net uses such as a fishing net and industrial material uses such as a rope and having all the excellent strength, modulus of elasticity and thermal stability while having high toughness. SOLUTION: The polyester fiber is obtained by melt spinning and drawing and simultaneously satisfies the following requirements (1) to (4). (1)≥10.0 cN/dtex strength, (2)≥130 cN/dtex modulus of elasticity, (3)≥30 toughness in which toughness=strength(cN/dtex)×äelongation (%)}<SP>1/2</SP>and (4) <15% change in modulus of elasticity MC in which MC(%)=ä(Mb-Ma)/Mb}×100 äwherein, Mc is the change in modulus of elasticity; Mb is the modulus of elasticity (cN/dtex) before treatment; and Ma is the modulus of elasticity (cN/dtex) after heat treatment at 150°C×10 min at a constant length}.
