PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a water-repellent film having superior transparency, adhesiveness to a substrate, film hardness, scratch resistance, water resistance and chemical durability, and besides superior stain preventive effect. SOLUTION: The method for forming the water-repellent coating comprises the steps of: forming a thin film on a substrate, which contains Si and Zr but controls Si so that when Si is converted into SiO<SB>2</SB>and Zr is converted into ZrO<SB>2</SB>respectively, the amount of SiO<SB>2</SB>can occupy 10 wt.% to 90 wt.% in the total amount of SiO<SB>2</SB>and ZrO<SB>2</SB>; subsequently applying an alkali silicate solution onto the thin film; heat-treating the film; further applying a solution including a silane coupling agent having a fluorocarbon chain onto the thin film; and heat-treating the film.
