A retaining device (20) guides a round bar to be processed against a grinding abrasive belt (GAB) (12) running round on a deflection pulley (16) and has a counter roller (CR) (26) with a clearance from the deflection pulley. First (38), second (40) and third (42) support elements (SE) support a round bar to be processed at three points between the GAB, the CR and the SE.
