PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a magnetic resonance imaging apparatus where both image quality deterioration control and respiration synchronous pickup are possible. SOLUTION: The light and shade of a profile reflects signal intensity. The MR signals of fat in both the back and the chest or the abdomen of a subject get larger and can be detected as their edges. Movements of the chest or the abdomen by respirations on profiles are detected as the upper or lower limit edges of the chest or the abdomen, and a slice where the movement variations become the maximum is specified and determined as the slice to get the monitor signals therefrom. The point to obtain the determined monitor signal is transformed into conditions to pickup the respiration monitor sequence after taking account of the RF waveform table, etc., applied to the respiration monitor sequence.
