A method and apparatus using electromagnetic switching in a two-step connection process is provided to minimize surge currents and torque oscillations in three-phase motors during starts.

1. An electromechanical switching device, comprising:
a plurality of poles each comprising a movable contact assembly for completing and interrupting current paths through the device; and a moving contact carrier having a plurality of pole windows in which respective movable contact assemblies are received; wherein one of the pole windows is offset with respect to two other pole windows for closing a movable contact assembly received in one pole window after other movable contact assemblies received in the two other pole windows, wherein each movable contact assembly comprises a moving contact, and wherein the moving contacts for all poles are the same as one another and do not require modification.
