The packaging installation (1) has feed unit (3) and packaging machine (7) in which insertion station (9) and sealing station (10), sorting station (13) and controller (18) are arranged. The controller is designed such that products (19) supplied along a direction of production (R) from product feeder to sorting station are traced. A monitoring device (4) is arranged in front of or along product supply, for detecting property of products. The packages (21) are sorted by sorting station depending on category of packaged product in appropriate containers (14). An independent claim is included for method for operating packaging installation.
