To forward data blocks transmitted on incoming lines (E1, ..., En) via virtual links using an asynchronous transfer mode via a block exchange (BVA) to feeder lines (A1,..., An) connected to the latter, it is provided that an additional identifier is specified from the block exchange for each individual connection during the setting up of virtual links. This is added to the data blocks associated with the respective virtual link to transmit them within the block exchange. Following a transmission of this type, data blocks are forwarded to the feeder lines designated for the respective virtual link only if the additional identifier added in each case to the data blocks matches the additional identifier specified for the respective virtual link.
