PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning optical device by which a false synchronizing signal owing to a scattered light from a surface to be scanned is prevented from being generated without limiting the position of a detector for generating a synchronizing signal in an optical unit. SOLUTION: The scanning optical device is provided with an optical system for scanning a surface to be scanned via a scanning lens system by an optical beam which is emitted from a light source 11 and used for scanning by a light deflector 13, a synchronizing signal generating detector 19 for detecting the scanning start end of the optical beam and a light shielding board 20 which is arranged to permit the scattered light from the surface to be scanned not to be made incident to the detector in the case of scanning by the optical beam.
