PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of overwhelmingly high-speed retrieval rather than fast forward by a VHS; and simply retrieving a moving picture aimed at performance feeling no stress in its operation feeling unlike the high-speed retrieval for a microfilm with a thumbnail observing. SOLUTION: The method comprises: automatically detecting a scene change on the moving picture; extracting still picture or moving picture clips at the changed portion; collecting them for thumbnail display; simultaneously recording the name and serial number of the moving picture corresponding to each thumbnail, and the thumbnail number, and the like; double-clicking the desired thumbnail to generate an event for selecting the thumbnail; and displaying the specific scene of an original moving picture from the thumbnail number and moving picture ID (Identification).
