<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide techniques for reducing the operational burden on a user in the authentication process of a digital multifunction machine without losing the reliability of authentication. <P>SOLUTION: When a user inputs a user ID and a password (S11), the input information is transmitted to the digital multifunction machine (S12). The multifunction machine authenticates, the user ID and the password (S21); if they are authenticated, an abbreviated code is issued (S22) and is transmitted to the PC (S23). The abbreviated code is displayed on a screen of the PC (S13). When the user uses the digital multifunction machine next time, the abbreviated code is input in place of the user ID and the password (S24). The digital multifunction machine implements an authentication process based on the abbreviated code input and determines whether or not login is possible.
