Message Translations

Systems for translating text messages in an instant messaging system comprise a translation engine for translating text messages into a preferred language of a recipient of the text messages. The systems are preferably configured to send and receive the text messages and to determine whether the text messages that are received in a source language are in the preferred language of the recipients so that the text messages are displayed in the preferred language of the recipients of the text messages. Other systems and methods are also provided.

1. A method comprising:
receiving a preferred language identification for each of a plurality of message accounts associated with a first user; associating each preferred language identification with a respective one of the plurality of message accounts, each of the plurality of message accounts having a different preferred language identification; determining that a source language of an electronic message sent via a particular one of the plurality of message accounts from the first user to a second user is different from a first preferred language associated with the particular message account; and translating the electronic message to the first preferred language.
