PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability in starting-up an internal combustion engine with respect to starting failure due to insufficient compression of intake air.SOLUTION: Cranking is continued (S9, 10) while advancing a timing to close an intake valve (S8), when the difference between a maximum value and a minimum value of rotating speeds of a crank shaft during the cranking for starting-up an internal combustion engine, is smaller than a threshold value (S7), and start-up is not completed (S6) even after the lapse of a prescribed time from the starting of the start-up of the internal combustion engine. The small difference between the maximum value and the minimum value of the rotating speeds, indicates leakage of the intake air from a combustion chamber in a compressing stroke. By advancing the intake valve timing, effective compression pressure is increased, and rotary torque of the engine is reinforced. |
