Provided is a method for producing a plant cell or plant with increased phlorizin content, the method comprising transformation of a plant cell or plant with a polynucleotide encoding a specified polypeptide or a variant with at least 70% sequence identity to the polypeptide. Further provided are corresponding polynucleotides and methods for the biosynthesis of pholrizin in transgenic plant cells as well as corresponding transgenic plants.
