PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focusing device and method capable of shortening focusing time while ensuring focusing accuracy. SOLUTION: In step S1, a search in rough steps is carried out. In step S2, it is determined whether a search in fine steps is necessary or not. In step S3, if the search in fine steps is necessary, processing proceeds to step S4. If not, it proceeds to step S6. When proceeding to step S4, the proximity of the maximum value searched in rough steps is subjected to a search in fine steps. In step S5, a focused position is determined based on an AF evaluation value obtained as a result of the search in the fine steps. When proceeding to step S6, a focused position is determined based upon an AF evaluation value obtained as a result of the search in the rough steps.
