PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radiographic image information reader capable of securely protecting an radiation conversion panel, stored in a cassette loaded in the reader, against exposure to radiation, and to provide a method of controlling the same. SOLUTION: When the cassette 24 storing a stimulable phosphor panel P is loaded in a cassette loader 38 and a cover is opened, a shutter 58 stored in a shutter storage part 59 is conveyed via a curved conveying path 56 and inserted into the cassette 24, thereby protecting the stimulable phosphore panel P from radiation.
