PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the occurrence of a situation which becomes an obstacle to the movement of a scanning member before performing work such as image reading operation and printing operation, and to stop the work when abnormality is detected. SOLUTION: The scanner 1 relatively moving a carriage 5 to an original P is equipped with a rotary encoder 10 for detecting the position of the carriage 5. Whether or not the position of the carriage 5 is a home position 25 when electric power is turned on is judged. When judging that the position thereof is not the home position 25 when the electric power is turned on based on the judgement, the carriage 5 is moved to an image reading area 34 side. Then, whether or not a movable distance to the image reading area 34 side is a predetermined distance is judged.
