PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read quantity-of-light signals from the same density at a constant level and maintain excellent quality in reading both sides of a document at one time with two document readers. SOLUTION: An image reader has a first document reading means 3 which is placed on one carrying surface on a conveyer 22, and a second document reading means 4 which is placed on another carrying surface. When images on both sides of a document are simultaneously read using the first and second document reading means 3 and 4 at the same scanning rate, both sides of the document are simultaneously read by the first and second document reading means 3 and 4 at a slower scanning rate of two image reading means. Then, the amount of light from a light source of the first or second document reading means with a faster scanning rate is corrected comparing to one-side reading, and irradiation energy is kept constant in one-side and both-side document reading.
