An alternator 90 for generating electricity is driven by a turbine 110 in the exhaust 50 of an i.c. engine, allowing all the power generated by the engine (and fed into the crankshaft) to be used for primary purposes, such as locomotion. The alternator 90 may be driven directly from the turbine axle or via a belt 80 and pulley (100, fig.2). The turbine 110 may also drive an accessory device eg an air conditioning compressor 130, air pump and/or a water pump 140. The air pump may expel air at a propelling nozzle or may be connectable to the pneumatic tyres of the vehicle. The axle of the turbine 110 may drive an intake air compressor (160, fig.4), ie as a turbocharger. The exhaust outlets (200, fig.5) may be located at the rear of the vehicle, eg lorry (180) to discharge into a turbulent and/or low pressure region behind the vehicle to reduce drag. The exhaust nozzles may be jet propelling nozzles. |
