PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the partial distortion of a thin member during machining by providing a cutting insert of a throw-away type with chipping grooves having chipping control ability during slight cutting at a very small depth in feeding and cutting. SOLUTION: A cutting insert 10 with a small-radius nose 40 is designed with chipping grooves pressed. The pressed chipping grooves have narrow cutting lands 42 with acute wedged surfaces 44, 46 at a positive shearing angle adjacent to the cutting insert 10 inside to form the cutting insert 10 with the small-radius nose 40. The small-radius nose and the narrow cutting land 42 combined reduces force in the radial direction and reduces a heating value for a high-temperature alloy material requiring a good surface finish and a close allowance during machining. Low carbon steel, stainless steel and high- temperature alloy materials are cut in an extremely shallow depth at a low or intermediate speed and cut and profiled at a slow feed speed. |
