PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound useful as a formulating material for perfumes in the field of foods, cosmetics, etc., in a large amount in good yield in simple steps according to simple means by reacting a specific diepoxyoct-1-ene with an epoxide rearranging agent. SOLUTION: 3,7-Dimethyl-3,6:7,8-diepoxyoct-1-ene represented by formula I is reacted with an epoxide rearranging agent to produce a lilac aldehyde represented by formula II. The above epoxide rearranging agent is preferably a solid acid catalyst, a Lewis acid catalyst or a lithium halide. The catalyst is used in an amount of preferably 0.1-5 times based on the weight of the compound represented by formula I in the case of the solid acid catalyst, preferably 0.1-1 based on the weight of the compound represented by formula I in the case of the lithium halide and in a molar amount of preferably 0.0001-0.1 based on the compound represented by formula I in the case of the Lewis acid catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out at 15-120 deg.C reactional temperature. The compound represented by formula I can simply be synthesized by epoxidizing a compound represented by formula III in the presence of a suitable solvent with a peracid. |
