Liq. crystal (LC) cpds. of formula (I) and (II), 1-(4-(trans-cyclohexyl)- trans-cyclohexyl) -3,5-difluorobenzene cpds. (IIA); and 4-(4-(trans-cyclohexyl) -trans-cyclohexyl) -2,6-difluorophenol cpds. (IIB) are new. In the formulae, X = H in (IIA) and X = OH in (IIB); R = H, 1-15C alkyl(ene), opt. with one CN or CF3 or at least one halogen substit., in which 1 or more CH2 gps. may be replaced by -O-, -S-, -CO-, -CO-O-, -O-CO- or -O-CO-O- but the O atoms are not linked directly; Z1 and Z independently = -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH-, -CC- or a single bond and one of Z1 and Z may also be -(CH2)4- or -CH=CH-CH2CH2-; A and A1 independently = trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, in which 1 or 2 non-adjacent CH2 gps. may be replaced by -O-, or 1,4-phenylene, opt. with 1 or 2 F and/or Cl substits., in which 1 or 2 CH gps. may be replaced by N; m = 0, 1, 2 or 3; o and s = O, 1 or 2, such that (s+o) = 2 or more; W = -O-, -COO- or a single bond; Q = -O-, -CH=CH- or a single bond; r = 1-7; t = 0-7; Y = F, Cl, CF3, OCF3, CHF2, OCHF2 or OCH2F; L = F.
