(8-Quinolyloxy)alkanone (thio)acetals of formula (I) and their salts and N-oxides are new, except for (8-quinolyoxy) acetaldehyde diethyl acetal (Ia): R = halogen or 1-4C alkyl; Z1 and Z2 = O or S; R1 and R2 = H, 1-8C alkyl, 3-8C alkenyl, (1-4C)alkoxy(1-4)alkyl, 1-12C haloalkyl, 3-12C haloalkenyl or phenyl(1-2C)alkyl, or R1+R2= di-, tri- or tetramethylene opt. substd. by one or two 1-8C alkyl, 1-4C haloalkyl or (1-4C)alkoxy (1-4C)alkyl qps. and/or by an oxo gp.; R3 = H or 1-4C alkyl; n = 0-2.
