PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium excellent in recording and reproducing characteristics at high density and very excellent in durability and weather resistance. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer on a flexible nonmagnetic substrate and the magnetic layer contains a ferromagnetic metal powder and a binder. The ferromagnetic metal powder has >0.13 to 0.18μm average major axis size (L), >125 to 190 deg.C flash point temperature (Tf) and 35-45m2/g SSA(specific surface area) by the BET method, the ratio (SSA/L) of the SSA to the average major axis size (L) is <=300 and the coercive force (He) of the ferromagnetic metal powder is 114-145 kA/m.
