PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate connecting operation of optical fibers with superior workability without using an exclusive connecting tool. SOLUTION: In a base plate 3 and a cover plate 4 comprising a mechanical splice main body 21, there are respectively installed introducing grooves 9, 4e for inserting an optical fiber. Into the guiding holes formed by these introducing grooves 9, 4e, the inserting part 6b of a wedge piece 6 is inserted. With a pressing face 6e of the inserting part 6b, through the inserting operation of the wedge piece 6, a protective coating part formed in the optical fibers is held by pressure against the groove face of the introducing groove 4e in the cover plate 4.
