PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector that has superior motion picture display characteristics and uniform in-face display characteristics, and has no increase in the manufacturing cost and power consumption. SOLUTION: The projector includes: liquid crystal devices 400R, 400G, and 400B that modulate illuminating luminous fluxes according to image information; a projecting optical system 600 that projects the illuminating luminous fluxes modulated by the liquid crystal devices; an illumination device 100, that emits an illuminating luminous flux having such a sectional shape that the illuminating luminous flux is compressed in the y-axis direction so as to illuminate the entire image forming area of each liquid crystal device in the x-axis direction and illuminate part of the entire image formation area of it in the y-axis direction; and a rotary prism 770 that scans the illuminating luminous flux along the y-axis direction of the image forming area of each liquid crystal device. In the projector, optical filters 410R, 410G, 410B are disposed on the light incident face side of the corresponding liquid crystal device, with each optical filter being such that the light transmittance in the middle section in the y-axis direction is lower than transmittance at either end in the y-axis direction.
