A flame proof collector pipe is positioned over the escaping gas or liquid by a frame, which ensures that the collector pipe maintains a sealed fit over the escape. The flame is thereby trapped in the collector pipe. The length and cross sectional area of the collector pipe is such that the nominal amt. of air in the pipe is insufficient to support combustion of the gases. The length of the pipe is selected, typically 10 to 20m, so that the temp. of the gas at the end of the pipe is below its flash point. The frame and collector pipe assembly is carried by a remote controlled tracked vehicle, equipped with television and infra-red cameras. ADVANTAGE - Used for extinguishing oil well or natural gas fires. Enables fires to be extinguished in situations where water or foam resources are limited. Effective even where the surroundings have been heated due to the length of time of burning, and where the possibility of self ignition is high.
