This invention relates to an androgen-regulated gene, PMEPA1, and proteins encoded by this gene, including variants and analogs thereof. Methods of inhibiting cancer cell growth, reducing androgen receptor expression, modulating the expression of genes that are transcriptionally regulated by androgen receptor, and diagnosing and/or prognosing prostate cancer are also provided.
