PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary kiln and its operation method wherein combustion temperature of a treating object is controlled to be kept in an appropriate range, and heavy metals contained in the treating object are efficiently separated by vaporization. SOLUTION: In the operation method for a roasting furnace of a detoxification treatment apparatus detoxifying the treating object 11 by burning, the rotary kiln 1 lined with refractory 12, provided with a supply port 3 of the treating object at one end and a discharge port of the treated object at the other end serving as an outlet, is used as the roasting furnace, a combustion burner 10 is provided at the outlet of the rotary kiln 1, a thermoviewer 15 is set for observing the axial direction in the rotary kiln 1 for measuring the temperature distribution in the kiln, and at least one of the output of the combustion burner 10 and the number of revolution of the rotary kiln 1 is increased or decreased based on the increase or decrease of the temperature distribution in the kiln.
