PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of accurately detecting a printing defect without being affected by a setting value of a document scan resolution designated by a user.

SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus includes: a detection means (steps S1304 and 1305) for detecting a printing defect of a printer on the basis of scanned image data of a document image printed by the printer; a setting means for setting a resolution Ri of the scanned image data to an arbitrary value through user operation; a change means (step S1303) for changing a resolution Ru set by the setting means into a resolution Rd predetermined for image data used for printing defect detection processing by the detection means in the case that the resolution Ru is lower than the resolution Rd (Yes in step S1301); and a conversion means (step S1307) which performs processing for conversion into the resolution Ru set by the setting means for the image data read with the resolution Rd changed by the change means after the end of printing defect detection processing by the detection means.
