The invention provides a method to reduce the emission of ammonia from manure in animal accommodation and/or when stored, by admixing the manure with at least one ammonia- binding agent. Prior to the admixture, the manure is preferably separated into a thick fraction and a thin fraction, and the ammonia-binding agent is added to the thin fraction to obtain a flushing fluid. The flushing fluid obtained can be used, for example, for flushing manure out of animal accommodation or for collecting therein the manure produced in the animal accommodation. The ammonia-binding agent is preferably formaldehyde.
