A fiber-reinforced thermoplastic resin pipe (20) is prepared by depositing (46) a base fiber/matrix material (22) of fibers embedded in a thermoplastic resin matrix onto an elongated stationary mandrel (62) parallel to the direction of elongation of the mandrel (62). The base fiber/matrix material (22) is partially consolidated (48) onto the mandrel (62) using a combination of heat and radially inwardly directed pressure. An overwrap fiber/matrix material (26) of fibers embedded in a thermoplastic resin is wrapped (52) over the partially consolidated base material (22), achieving further consolidation. The base fiber/matrix material (22) and the overwrap fiber/matrix material (26) are thereafter simultaneously consolidated (54) to full density using a combination of heat and radially inwardly directed pressure.
