An apparatus and a method for controlling an image forming apparatus are provided to reduce the waste of the unnecessary printing paper. A sensing sensor(S1) is installed between a photosensitive drum and a discharge roller and senses the existence of the printing paper passed through the discharge roller. When the printing paper is sensed, the sensing sensor transmits the paper sensing signal with a low level state to a main control member(100). When the printing paper is not sensed, the sensing sensor transmits the paper sensing signal with a high level state to the main control member. The main control member detects the length of the printing paper according to the transmitted paper sensing signal. The main control member outputs a motor driving signal with a low level state to a subsidiary cassette control member(200) during the time corresponding to the length of the detected printing paper so that a subsidiary motor member(58) is driven.
