Method and apparatus for header translation of ATM cells

The method involves addressing a memory space for a virtual channel number contained in the header of the cell to identify a first context zone. The first context zone indicates the range of virtual channels used in the cell. A second context zone is addressed at the output of the virtual channel and a base address read in the first context zone is used to obtain a list of directions which take the cell to the output of the node. A formatting section (6) generates a new header.
