Mail address reading method uses digital coder for identifying address zone for scanned mail item when address is not detected within expected address zone

Digital image of address zone is on front surface of each mail item provided by image scanner, for storage and evaluation via automatic evaluation unit, with image of full front surface of mail item fed to video coder when address zone is not known, for detection and storage of address zone, before repeating automatic address reading process. Address code can be printed on each mail item under control of read address. An Independent claim for an automatic mail address reading device is also included.
