Method for control of the welding of a seam (15) between two plastic components (11, 12) using a laser beam (20) uses optical monitoring of the quality of the weld. A control beam (30) of electromagnetic radiation is used to irradiate the contact surfaces (13) between the components and the seam. The intensities of the reflected beams (33, 33') are measured and a processor (37) detects faults in the weld. An Independent claim is also included for apparatus for carrying out the method, in which a common working head contains the laser (21) and its controls and a device for generating the control beam and measuring (36) the control beam.
