A METHOD OF SELECTING A REFERENCE PICTURE FOR PROCESSING A FIELD MACROBLOCK

A method for selecting a reference picture is provided to determine a reference picture index by frame in a picture or slice level and allocate a low index to a reference field at a distance temporally close to a current frame, and allocate a high index to a reference field at a distance temporally far from the current frame, thereby providing reference picture information used in motion compensation efficiently. A method for selecting a reference picture comprises the following steps of: acquiring a reference picture list including information about plural reference pictures by frame; realigning a reference picture index allocated to each reference picture of the reference picture list; acquiring the reference picture index indicating reference pictures by field for a field macro block; determining one of reference pictures by frame included into the reference picture list as a reference picture on the basis of a value that the reference picture is divided by two; selecting a reference picture by field on the basis of the reference picture index and the reference picture by frame.
