PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make an evaluation on the rate of decline in an electrochemically active surface area of an electrode catalyst without the need for actually installing a fuel cell in an automobile body.SOLUTION: A method for evaluation of an electrode catalyst is arranged to perform a potential sweep on a fuel cell to obtain a cyclic voltammogram. In the method, when performing the sweep from a low potential side to a high potential side, a potential is held at the time of arrival at a predetermined first held potential. Further, a sweep from the first held potential to the low potential side is performed, in which an electric charge amount Q1 contributing to a reductive reaction of the electrode catalyst is determined. Subsequently, when performing the seep from the low potential to the high potential side, a potential is held at the time of arrival at the first held potential. Further, when performing the sweep from the first held potential to the low potential side, a potential is held at the time of arrival at a predetermined second held potential; at that time, an electric charge amount Q2 contributing to the reductive reaction of the electrode catalyst is determined. The rate of decline of an electrochemically active surface area is estimated from a difference S(metal stress) obtained by subtracting Q2 from Q1 and the electrochemically active surface area of the electrode catalyst.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6 |
