In a belt transmission system in which a drive pulley and a driven pulley trade roles, the present invention addresses the problem of extending belt and pulley service life and improving fuel efficiency while effectively reducing the occurrence of slippage and noise. As a means for solving said problem, a belt transmission system is provided with: a first pulley (9); a second pulley (7); an autotensioner (1) having a first tension pulley (5), a fixing member (13), and an arm (11) provided so as to be capable of swinging around the axis of the fixing member (13); and a second tension pulley (3). Both when the first pulley (9) is the drive pulley and when the second pulley (7) is the drive pulley, of the first tension pulley (5) and the second tension pulley (3), the torque of the tension pulley located on the slack side when maximal torque is being generated is made to be greater than the torque of the tension pulley located on the tight side.
