Geometry features of a part are determined, each described by a feature type and geometric parameters. An associated method standard is determined for each geometry feature, describing a variant for manufacturing the geometry feature. A method standard has modules that represent a machining unit and describe which machining unit is used in a forming operation. Module components are determined, describing tool parts needed to realize the module. Component parameters are determined from the geometric parameters of the geometry features, including geometric parameters of the components or tools.
