The transmission has a hydrostatic (4c) or mechanical converter with a hydrodynamic, hydrostatic or electrical retarder. The retarder is automatically activated during braking, whereby the retarder is activated as well as the operational brake depending on the actuation signal. The retarder braking force takes up part of the full operating braking force and the distribution of forces between the operating brake and the retarder is pref. determined by a predefined program.
