PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium in which good electromagnetic conversion characteristics is obtained even for high-density recording. SOLUTION: This medium is made to a multilayer coated structure formed so that on a nonmagnetic supporting body 1, a nonmagnetic layer as a lower layer 4 is formed and a magnetic layer as an upper layer 2 is formed. The thickness of the upper layer 2 is controlled to <=0.5μm and nonmagnetic reinforcing particles having >=5 Mohs' hardness, 2 to 6 specific gravity and <=0.5μm average particle size are added. On the other hand, the lower layer is made to contain acicular inorg. powder having 0.05 to 0.2μm major axial length as nonmagnetic powder.
