An brain scanning apparatus has a scanner device (4) and a host computer (7). Collimated scintillation gamma ray detectors within the scanner device are scanned to detect gamma radiation emitted from a desired portion, or slice, of a brain of a patient on headrest (3) and the computer reconstructs a visual image of the emitted gamma radiation which is displayed on the console (9). The collimator in each gamma ray detector in the scanner device is converging and of a short focus. The focal point of each collimator is within the brain as the gamma ray detectors scan the patient. The reconstruction of the visual image of the emitted gamma radiation (which may represent brain function activity) may be the result of a reiterated comparison between data collected from an actual scan of the brain of the patient and data obtained from a theoretical scan.
|
