A suction cleaner comprises a suction unit which includes a source of suction, means for separating and collecting dirt from the flow of air induced by the source of suction and a suction hose for attachment of a cleaning tool. The suction unit is also provided with internal storage means 21 for the suction hose 22, so that the hose 22 can be deployed from storage means 21 for use and retracted thereto for storage. Energy storage means 59, preferably batteries, are present in order to operate a means to cause retraction of the hose 22 to the storage means 21. The hose storage means 21 is preferably rotatable and retraction of the hose 22 thereto is preferably carried out by an electric motor 58, which maybe connected to the hose storage means 21 by reduction transmission. Detection means may also be present for detecting when the hose 22 has completely retracted to the storage means 21, this detection may either be effected in response to a predetermined amount of rotation of the storage means 21 or to the amount of hose 22 stored by the storage means 21. |
