PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To uniformly heat a cast slab or a steel slab in the width direction regarding to a heating apparatus for heating a metal plate. SOLUTION: On the surface of the cast slab H, a plurality of plasma torches 10 are parallel arranged along the width direction A of the cast slab H, and the metal bars 11, 12 are disposed so as to interpose the line of the plurality of plasma torches 10 from both sides of the width direction A. The metal bars 11, 12 are stood so as to flow electric current in the same direction as the plasma arcs P formed with the plasma torches 10, and in the metal bars 11, 12, DC electric sources 13, 14 adjustable to current value, are arranged. The metal bars 11, 12 can be shifted in the horizontal direction with a horizontal shifting mechanism 20 and the magnetic field formed with the electric current I of the plasma arc P is negated with the magnetic field formed with the electric current I<SB>1</SB>of the metal bars 11, 12 by adjusting the current value of the metal bars 11, 12 and the position of the shifting part in the width direction A.
