A process for producing a coated abrasive with an engineered surface which comprises; a) using a rapid prototyping technique to produce a master tool (1); b) using the master tool to generate a production tool (2); c) using the production tool to impose a desired pattern on a layer of a curable binder resin having abrasive particles dispersed therein (5); and d) curring the curable binder resin to produce a coated abrasive having an engineered surface (6).
