A set of two lifting assemblies for lifting a container on or off a truck or trailer is disclosed. Each lifting assembly comprises first ram (3) and second ram (4). The end of the shaft of each of rams (3, 4) is coupled to opposed ends of arm (2). A pin couples one end of arm (2) to ram (4). A sling or chain, for lifting a container, is connected, in use, to the pin. Pivotally connected to the shaft of rams (3, 4) is ram (1) which, when activated, pushes the centreline of arm (2) in line with the centreline of ram (3) and when further extended, brings ram (4) to an angle with ram (3), where the bottom is connected to a frame (7) at the centre of the truck or trailer. Connected to the hinge pin on the bottom is a restraining beam (5) which prevents the container touching rams (3, 4). When ram (4) is extended the bottom foot will come to rest on the supporting surface beside the truck or trailer. The foot contains a spherical ball joint for conforming to a sloping supporting surface. In this position, together with the position of ram (3), the need for outriggers to lessen the tendency of the vehicle chassis to twist is eliminated. (61) Addition to 542191
