Additive for extending the open pot life of aqueous compositions comprising polymer dispersions is produced from the reaction product of an unsaturated ester oil and an unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride, a hydroxy-functional alkoxylated alcohol, carboxylic acid, alkylamine or carboxamide and an unsaturated hydroxy compound. Additive for extending the open pot life of aqueous compositions comprising polymer dispersions is produced from: (a) the reaction product of an unsaturated ester oil (I) and an unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride (II), where (I) has an iodine number above 95 and is the reaction product of a saturated or unsaturated alcohol and an unsaturated fatty acid having more than 12 carbon (C) atoms; (b) a hydroxy-functional 1-4C-alkoxylated alcohol, carboxylic acid, alkylamine or carboxamide; and (c) an unsaturated hydroxy compound having 4-15 C atoms and optionally an oxygen atoms other than the hydroxy oxygens. An Independent claim is also included for a process for producing such an additive, comprising reacting (I) with (II) at 120-270 deg C and reacting the product with a mixture of components (b) and (c) in a (b):(c) molar ratio of 0.15-0.9:1 at 20-180 deg C.
