A fuel cell wherein a positive electrode layer (13) and a negative electrode layer (14) are formed on both sides of an electrolyte membrane (12), respectively and wherein hydrogen is brought into contact with the catalyst of the negative electrode layer and oxygen is brought into contact with the catalyst of the positive electrode layer. The positive electrode layer contains an electrolyte, carbon (36, 37), a catalyst (38) supported by the carbon, a pore-forming material, and a water-repelling resin. In the region of the positive electrode layer near the electrolyte membrane (34), the reactio n between oxygen and hydrogen progresses at high speed. Accordingly the weight ratio between the electrolyte and carbon is made high and the amount of catalyst supported is increased. In the region where the produced water tend s to stay, the amount of pore-forming material and the amount of water-repelli ng resin are increased. |
