PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic sensing element, along with its manufacturing method, capable of supplying a bias magnetic field of appropriate dimension to a free magnetic layer while properly keeping insulation from, especially, a hard bias layer. SOLUTION: The thickness T3 of a first insulating layer which is formed on a side end face 22a of a laminate 22 is formed thinner than a film thickness T4 of a second insulating layer 26 formed on a lower shield layer 20. So, a bias magnetic field of appropriate dimension can be supplied to a free magnetic layer 28 from a hard bias layer 36. The insulation between the hard bias layer 36 and the laminate 22 as well as that between the hard bias layer 36 and the lower shield layer 20 are kept well. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
